๐ต What Currency is Used in Lebanon?
Lebanon primarily operates on USD ($) and Lebanese Lira (LBP). We recommend bringing cash, as credit card fees can be high and not all places accept cards. ๐ด NOTE: Do not put in a currency exchange order at any bank! If we do need to get you Lebanese Lira, we can exchange USD for it in Lebanon. The black market exchange rate is way more favorable.
โ๏ธ Will my phone work in Lebanon?
If you have an international phone plan, check if Lebanon is covered. From experience we know that most U.S. international phone plans do not cover this little country of ours.
Otherwise, you can get a local SIM card at the airport or at any cell phone shops or Western Union/OMT shops in almost all towns.
We recommend the AirAlo App where you can buy Lebanese eSims if your phone is compatible.
๐ฑ Are there any specific applications I should download for Lebanon?
1. Google Maps - For direction purposes
2. Uber/Bolt/Allo Taxi - For transportation services
3. WhatsApp - This will probably be the MOST important application you download. Lebanon phone plans don't work like US phone plans. It's expensive to use your cell carrier to call/text so all locals use WhatsApp for everything. You'll need it for your taxi, hotel, restaurant reservations, everything. Plus it makes group chats easy and fun! Similar to the previous question, if your phone carrier doesn't have an international plan, we can get you a Lebanese SIM card, or eSim, to get data going on your phone to be able to use WhatsApp and all other apps.
โDo people in Lebanon speak english? How will i communicate with the Lebanese?
Yes! Lebanese people speak English and French, as well as Arabic.
In the bigger cities you won't have any problem communicating in English (maybe just with the really old people). In the smaller villages you could run into instances where the locals don't speak English, but they will find a way to help you anyway :)
๐ฆ๏ธ What's the weather in Lebanon like?
Expect warm, sunny, possibly humid days. The temperature fluctuates a little bit depending on where you are in the country.
Beirut will be quite hot and humid.
Baakline (Nader's village) will be warm.
Ras el Maten (Sabrina's village) will be warm and possibly humid.
๐ฅ Is it safe to eat the food and drink the water in Lebanon?
We won't lie, if you have a weak stomach, you might want to avoid fruits and vegetables the first few days. We highly recommend that you bring charcoal pills with you and Imodium pills (can be found at Target) just as a precaution. The charcoal will line your stomach so that you don't get bothered by what you eat, and the Imodium will assist you in the event that you are spending too much time in the bathroom ๐ฝ ๐
. Otherwise, we have very convenient pharmacies in all villages and cities that carry these items! ๐ด NOTE: Only drink bottled water as Lebanon's tap water is unsafe to drink.
๐ What do I wear in Lebanon?
Anything you want! No rules here.
Do pack a swimsuit for your beach days and light, breathable clothing for all the others! You might also want to bring a light sweater for the evenings in the mountains.
Just make sure to also pack one modest outfit in case you do some religious sightseeing (pants/skirts/dresses below the knee and covered shoulders).
๐ What should I wear to the wedding?
Lebanese people like to go all out, so definitely be prepared to put on a fashion show. Lots of Lebanese have one outfit for the day time ceremonies and then change into another outfit for the evening reception. You definitely do not have to do that! Do what makes you happy and comfortable! Just note that both day and night time are very formal and fancy. Take into consideration the heat during the day though.
๐ง๐ป Can I bring my children to the wedding?
Yes and No.
During the day ceremonies at both locations (refer to Wedding Day Details tab), children of all ages are more than welcome!
However, we kindly ask that you do not bring your children to the evening reception. If you are unable to accommodate family members or friends to look after them, please let Sabrina or Nader know in advance and we will coordinate a babysitter to stay with them at your lodgings.
